In medical and furniture components, the locking gas springs is one of the most important elements. It is also called lockable gas struts, or locking gas shocks, with which users can adjust and securely fix the angle or height of the equipment. In other words, it plays a very significant role in realizing the ultimate comfort and safety benefit for users.
How Locking Gas Springs Work? Locking gas springs work via an internal valve:When the valve is closed, high-pressure gas is trapped so the spring locks firmly in place. When you press the release lever, the valve opens and the gas flows freely, allowing the spring to move and be adjusted to virtually any position.
In the following section, we will detail the specifications of our locking gas springs from a manufacturer’s perspective. Additionally, we will present their structural composition diagrams and manufacturing processes.
Precision-Engineered Locking Gas Springs Types
Depending on the specific design requirements and kinematic layouts of different applications, the mechanical characteristics of locking gas springs vary significantly. GASTAC bypasses standard catalog compromises to provide application-specific internal valving built strictly to your engineering prints.
Elastic Locking
The entire locking stroke operates within a pressurized nitrogen gas column rather than pure oil. When the valve closes, the compressed gas column acts as a deliberate, high-frequency shock absorber while maintaining the preset position.
Rigid Locking in Compression
The internal piston is completely submerged in oil when locked under downward pressure. Under heavy compression loads, it acts as a solid steel rod—completely unyielding.
Rigid Locking in Tension
The internal oil chamber shifts to the opposite side of the piston. When the spring is locked, it provides absolute resistance against outward pulling forces, ensuring the extended stroke cannot be forcefully compressed or deflected.
Locking Gas Spring with Release Button
A standard gas spring integrated with a specialized mechanical locking button mechanism. It automatically drops into a solid mechanical detent to freeze the stroke exclusively at the fully extended or fully compressed end-positions, requiring a manual button press to resume travel.
Gas Strut Safety Lock
Features an external, heavy-duty protective steel shroud or locking sleeve over the piston rod. In the event of sudden internal pressure failure or unexpected overload, the mechanical sleeve automatically mechanical-stops or manually locks to prevent accidental column compression or collapse.
GASTAC Locking Gas Springs
GASTAC’s premium series of locking gas springs is precision-engineered to deliver infinite height, pitch, or angle adjustment combined with unyielding, zero-drift position control. In complex mechanical sub-assemblies, a generic catalog standard is never enough. The true kinematic challenge lies at the mechanical pivots: a few millimeters of valve stroke change at the internal piston translates to degrees or inches of fluid, highly responsive motion on the end application.
How to read the Specifications of Locking Gas Springs
The universal locking gas springs generally have an outer tube with a diameter of Ø28mm and a piston rod with a diameter of 10Ømm (or custom cylinder/rod combinations based on load requirements). The cylinder end and the piston rod end are connected to the driving linkages, pivoting sub-assemblies, or structural frames of your application via customized end fittings.
- Rod Diameter: The thickness of the inner moving steel shaft, which determines the load support strength and prevents the spring from bending under pressure.
- Body Diameter: The thickness of the outer cylinder housing the internal nitrogen and oil, which dictates the physical space needed to install the spring.
- Extended Length: The absolute maximum total length when the spring is fully open, which dictates the highest position or angle your equipment can reach.
- Stroke: The actual functional travel distance the rod moves in and out, where a few millimeters of change translates to degrees of motion on your mechanism.
GASTAC Locking Gas Springs Specifications Range
As a critical component for height adjustment or tilt control, locking gas springs must be robust enough to withstand weight capacities exceeding 2,000 N (200 kg). Therefore, the diameters of both the piston rod and the steel cylinder are of paramount importance. To fulfill diverse market demands for varying load capacities, locking gas springs are categorized into five distinct types:

Structure of Locking Gas Springs
A locking gas spring achieves its controllable positioning through a specialized dual-chamber system separated by a valve mechanism. Unlike standard gas springs, it contains an internal valve rod running through a hollow piston rod, allowing users to lock the spring at any point along its stroke.
Hollow Piston Rod & Internal Release Pin
The piston rod is precision-ground and hollowed to house a solid steel release pin (actuator pin). When the external lever presses this pin, it pushes downward to open the internal valve.
Piston Assembly with Integrated Valve
The piston divides the pressure cylinder into two separate oil/gas chambers. It contains an internal valve sealed with specialized high-pressure rubber rings (O-rings) to control fluid migration.
Dual-Chamber Pressure Cylinder
Depending on the locking type (Rigid or Elastic), the cylinder is filled with high-pressure nitrogen (N2) gas for lifting force, paired with a specific volume of hydraulic oil for blocking and damping.
Guide and Seal Package
Located at the cylinder exit, a heavy-duty seal package (comprising lip seals, scrapers, and a guide bush) ensures zero gas leakage and perfect linear alignment under high side-loads.
For a better understanding of our locking gas spring technology, we present a cross-sectional structural diagram detailing the precision internal components engineered inside the cylinder.
Additionally, we have included a demonstration video to illustrate the exact mechanical function of the internal valve and fluid transfer during operation.

How are Gas Springs Produced?
To further explain our locking gas springs, we provide deeper insights into our production process here. In this section, you will discover every manufacturing detail of GASTAC’s lockable gas struts—one of the most critical components used in medical equipment and commercial furniture.
Tube Processing — Gas Springs Raw Materials
Seamless steel tubes are mandatory, while welded tubes are strictly prohibited, because the welded area is considered to be inhomogeneous (non-uniform in structure). If a welded tube is applied, it will very likely lead to the following problems:
- Gas cylinder leakage: Nitrogen gas will escape through the microscopic gaps or weak spots in the weld seam.
- Tube deformation: The cylinder will easily deform or warp when subjected to high internal pressure, heavy loads, or sudden shock impacts.
Gas Springs Steel Pipe Cleaning
Following the machining process, raw steel tubes naturally retain cutting fluids and micro-iron filings. At GASTAC, every cylinder undergoes a multi-stage ultrasonic cleaning and degreasing process prior to assembly. Eliminating these microscopic particulates is critical; even the smallest debris can damage the high-pressure rubber seals—especially the O-ring—and cause premature nitrogen gas leakage.
Gas Springs Rolling Crimping
- 1. Rolling Crimping: Cold hydraulic rollers press the tube into end-cap grooves. Fast, zero heat, and 100% gastight.
- 2. Projection Welding: Instant electric pulse fuses the tube and end-cap together. High strength, minimal heat.
- 3. Friction Welding: Ultra-high-speed friction melts the metals together. Flawless joint, strong as steel.
- 4. Threading & Gluing: Internal/external threads screwed tight with industrial metal glue. Zero heat, best for heavy-duty custom struts.
Gas Springs Assembly
- Loading: The precision-cleaned piston rod, piston, guide bushing, and high-pressure seals are loaded into the seamless steel tube.
- Crimping: Hydraulic machines roll a precise crimping groove onto the tube, permanently locking the internal guide components in place.
- Filling & Sealing: Hydraulic oil is injected for damping, followed by high-pressure nitrogen gas inflation to achieve the exact target force.
- Testing: Every assembled gas spring undergoes 100% force validation and leakage inspection to ensure zero defects.
Gas Springs Finished Product Cleaning
Before packaging, every finished gas spring undergoes a thorough wash to remove all residual oil and fingerprints. This ensures a pristine, smudge-free finish and prevents external dust from sticking to the piston rod during operation.
Gas Springs Testing
Every GASTAC gas spring undergoes 100% rigorous testing before delivery. We perform automated force validation to ensure exact lifting specs, advanced pressure-leakage checks to guarantee a perfect seal, and mechanical stroke testing to ensure flawless, smooth operation.
