What Are Pull Gas Springs & Struts?
What Are Pull Gas Springs & Struts?

Pull gas springs, are motion control devices designed to generate force in tension. Unlike standard gas springs that push outward, a pull gas strut works by pulling the rod inward, enabling controlled retraction and tensioning in various mechanical applications.

Key Features and Functions:

  • Reverse Operation: In a relaxed state, the rod remains inside the cylinder. When extended, internal gas pressure pulls it back inward.
  • Controlled Motion: Pulling gas struts provide smooth and damped motion, preventing sudden drops or uncontrolled movement.
  • Customization: Available in a wide force range (typically 50N to 4000N), allowing adaptation to different load requirements.
  • Benefits: Built with durable materials and filled with high-pressure nitrogen, pull gas springs improve operational safety and reduce manual effort.

Pull Gas Spring vs Compression Gas Spring

Gas-spring-vs-gas-tension-spring

The fundamental difference between a pull gas spring and a compression gas spring lies in the direction of force and functional purpose.

A pull gas spring (tension type) operates by extending under external pulling force and generating inward retraction force. It is typically used for pulling, lifting, or tensioning applications.

A compression gas spring (push type), on the other hand, extends outward in its natural state and compresses under load, providing support and cushioning for upward-opening doors or lids.

Key Differences:

  • Working Principle & Force Direction
    • Pulling gas springs: shortest at rest, extends under force, generates inward pulling force.
    • Compression gas spring: longest at rest, compresses under force, generates outward pushing force.
  • Structure & Mounting
    • Pulling gas struts: usually equipped with hooks, loops, or eyelets for tensile connection.
    • Compression gas springs: commonly use ball joints or threaded ends for support applications.
  • Working State
    • Pull gas spring: becomes longer when force is applied.
    • Compression gas spring: becomes shorter when force is applied.

In practical terms, choose a pull gas spring when tension or pulling force is required. For lifting or supporting applications, a compression gas spring is more suitable. For specialized applications, contact us for customization

Key Parameters of Pull Gas Springs

When selecting a pulling gas spring or pulling gas strut, several technical parameters directly influence performance and service life.

Force (F)
Pull gas struts generate force during extension. The force depends on internal gas pressure and rod diameter, and can be customized. Typically, maximum force is reached near the end of the stroke.

Stroke (S)
Stroke refers to the distance between fully extended and fully compressed positions. Common ranges are 50mm to 500mm. Proper design should reserve about 10% extra stroke to avoid overextension.

Installation Method

  • Install parallel to the direction of force to prevent side loading.
  • Use ball joints or eyelet fittings for flexible movement.
  • Recommended mounting: rod facing downward or horizontal for optimal sealing and lubrication.
  • Avoid welding or applying oil directly on the rod.

Lifespan
Service life depends on operating frequency, temperature, and installation accuracy. Excessive extension or high temperatures may damage seals and shorten lifespan.
