Trunk Lid Lift Support

Trunk lid Lift supports are pressurized cylinders that are used to support hoods, hatches and rear window glass in automotive applications.Trunk lid Lift supports are also used in many non-automotive applications. Each Gastac lift support is custom engineered, and manufactured beyond industry standards to provide smoother operating, and longer lasting performance.

When your factory trunk struts wear out, lose pressure, or fail during cold winter days, your trunk lid becomes incredibly heavy and prone to slamming down without warning. This isn’t just an inconvenience—it’s a severe safety hazard when you are loading groceries, luggage, or tools. You don’t need to pay expensive mechanic labor rates or deal with an unsafe trunk. With GASTAC high-quality, Direct-Fit Trunk lid lift Supports, you can completely restore new-car smoothness, reliable lifting power, and hands-free safety in less than 5 minutes.

What are Trunk Lid Lift Supports?

Trunk Lid Lift Supports (also commonly known as trunk lift struts, dampers, or gas shocks) are small, specialized hydropneumatic components that assist in opening, supporting, and closing a vehicle’s rear trunk lid. They are direct-fit hardware components consisting of a sealed, high-pressure nitrogen-filled cylinder and a sliding piston rod. They connect directly to the vehicle’s frame and trunk chassis via specific ball-and-socket joints.

Common Signs of Failed Trunk Lift Supports

When your trunk lid lift supports begin to fail or lose internal pressure, they will exhibit several distinct warning signs. Here are the most common signs of failure to look out for:

  • Trunk Lid Won’t Stay Open: The most frequent and obvious indicator; after opening the trunk, the lid completely fails to hold its position and falls back down immediately.
  • Trunk Lid Slowly Drops Down: The struts have lost partial pressure, allowing the trunk lid to stay open temporarily before it slowly and unexpectedly creeps down on its own.
  • Trunk Feels Heavy to Lift: Because the gas springs are no longer assisting with the vehicle’s structural weight, you have to use significant physical effort to force the trunk lid open.
  • One-Side Failure Overload: If one strut fails entirely, the remaining side becomes completely overloaded, causing the trunk to lift unevenly, feel heavy, or warp during operation.
  • Poor Performance in Cold Weather: The trunk drops or fails specifically during winter or cold days, as low temperatures cause the internal gas to contract and lose necessary lifting force.
  • Visible Oil or Gas Leaks: You notice greasy hydraulic oil residue leaking out of the cylinder seals or dripping down the polished piston rod, signaling that the internal seal system has cracked or worn out.

Why Trunk Lift Supports Fail?

Trunk lift supports are sealed, pressurized hardware components that gradually lose performance and structural integrity due to the following specific mechanical factors:

  • Natural gas pressure loss over time: High-pressure gas naturally escapes from the cylinder over years of use.
  • Internal seal wear and aging: The internal seals degrade, crack, and wear down over time, causing leaks.
  • Temperature fluctuations affecting gas pressure: Continuous changes in temperature alter the internal pressure, with extreme conditions accelerating failure.
  • Corrosion from moisture and road conditions: Moisture and road salt trapped in the trunk channels cause rust and surface damage to the metal components.
  • High-cycle fatigue from repeated opening and closing: Constant, repeated daily use creates mechanical fatigue on the internal structural parts.
  • Poor-quality aftermarket sealing systems: Low-quality replacement parts utilize subpar seals that fail prematurely and cannot hold pressure.

How to Replace Trunk Lid Lift Supports?

  • Secure the Trunk Lid: Have an assistant hold the trunk lid open. Do not do this alone; a heavy trunk lid will drop rapidly and can cause injury.
  • Release the Clip: Insert a flat-head screwdriver under the metal retaining clip on the old strut’s ball joint. Pry it up slightly and pull the strut off the ball stud.
  • Clean the Studs: Wipe away old grease and dirt from the mounting studs. Install the New Strut: Do not pry the new clips open.
  • Simply push the new strut socket onto the ball stud until you hear a distinct “Click”.
  • Repeat: Follow the same steps for the other side, then test the trunk operation.
