Is your rear hatch becoming a heavy lifting hazard? Over time, factory lift supports lose their pressurized gas, leading to a sagging or suddenly dropping tailgate. GASTAC heavy-duty Tailgate Struts are engineered to restore the effortless, hands-free convenience of your vehicle’s rear cargo area. Precision-manufactured to match or exceed OEM specifications, these gas-charged tailgate shocks provide optimal lifting power and controlled, smooth dampening. Whether you are loading groceries or packing gear for a weekend adventure, replace your worn-out parts today and stop propping your hatch up with a broomstick.

What are Tailgate Struts?

Tailgate struts are gas-filled supports that help lift and control the movement of a tailgate. They use compressed nitrogen gas to generate lifting force and provide controlled motion when opening or closing. Also called tailgate shocks they replace traditional mechanical supports with smoother safer operation.

Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Tailgate Struts

If your rear hatch is acting up, your tailgate shocks are likely failing. Watch out for these 4 clear warning signs:

  • The Tailgate Feels Heavy: It takes massive effort to lift—the gas pressure is gone.
  • The Hatch Drops Unexpectedly: It won’t stay up and crashes down (a huge safety hazard!).
  • Visible Oil Leaks: You see greasy residue on the metal rod or cylinder.
  • Stops Short: The door opens partway but won’t go all the way up on its own.

Why Tailgate Struts Fail?

Why do even original tailgate struts wear out? It comes down to three main reasons:

  • Seal Wear: Every time you open the trunk, the rubber seals experience friction. Over time, they naturally wear out and let the pressurized gas escape.
  • Weather Damage: Extreme winter cold shrinks the gas and hardens the rubber, while summer heat spikes internal pressure. Both crack the seals.
  • Dirt & Rust: Road grit and moisture scratch the smooth metal rod, tearing the internal seals whenever the tailgate shocks slide open or closed.

Step-by-Step Installation Gas Struts Guide

Replacing your worn-out tailgate struts is a quick and straightforward DIY project that requires no special automotive skills. By following the 4 simple steps below, you can restore smooth, hands-free lifting power to your rear hatch in less than 15 minutes. Just grab a small flathead screwdriver, and you are ready to swap your old tailgate shocks for a brand-new pair.

  1. Prop the Tailgate: Open your rear hatch fully. Have a friend hold its weight securely, or use a sturdy prop rod to lock it in place so it cannot fall during the swap.
  2. Release the Top Joint: Locate the metal retaining clip on the upper ball joint of the old tailgate shock. Use your flathead screwdriver to pry the clip outward just enough to pop the strut off the ball stud.
  3. Disconnect the Bottom Joint: Repeat the same prying process on the lower retaining clip. Once released, pull the old tailgate strut completely away from the vehicle.
  4. Snap the New Strut On: Align the sockets of your new tailgate strut with the vehicle’s ball studs. Push firmly until you hear a solid “snap” that locks the new tailgate shock securely into place. Repeat all steps on the other side.
