Auto Boot Struts

Auto boot struts are hydraulic or gas-filled components that aid in the controlled opening and secure holding of a car’s trunk. They ensure convenient and safe access to the storage space, enhancing user comfort and facilitating smooth loading and unloading.

What Are Auto Boot Gas Struts?

Auto boot struts (also called boot gas struts, tailgate struts, or trunk lift supports) are gas-charged cylinders designed to hold your vehicle’s rear hatch or boot lid open safely.

They are designed to:

  • Support the full weight of the boot lid or tailgate
  • Provide smooth opening and closing motion
  • Keep the boot securely open during loading
  • Prevent sudden or unexpected closure

When internal gas pressure decreases over time, lifting performance becomes weak and unstable.

Common Signs of Worn Auto Boot Shock

When the gas springs on your vehicle begin to lose their pressurized nitrogen charge or internal hydraulic fluid, they will display a few unmistakable warning signs. Catching these symptoms early prevents the rear hatch from dropping unexpectedly on your head or hands. Here are the 5 common signs that your auto boot gas struts are worn out and need to be replaced:

  • The Hatch Sags or Creeps Down: You push the tailgate all the way open, but it slowly drifts down by itself instead of staying locked in place.
  • Total Failure in Cold Weather: The trunk works fine on warm days but completely collapses on freezing winter mornings because cold temperatures drop the internal gas pressure.
  • Oily Residue on the Piston Rod: A wet oil film or greasy grime buildup on the silver rod means the internal hydraulic seal has broken and the pressurized gas is leaking out.
  • The Trunk Feels Extremely Heavy: Opening the boot feels like a workout. You are lifting the full weight of the steel and glass with your own muscles because the struts provide zero lifting assistance.
  • Harsh Metallic Shaking or Noises: The hatch squeaks, hisses, or shakes unsteadily when opening, lacking that smooth, controlled cushioning at the very top.

Quick Tip: Always replace auto boot struts in pairs. If one side is dead, the other is under double the stress and will fail shortly after.

How to Replace Auto Boot Struts?

Replacing your worn-out auto boot struts is a quick, straightforward project that requires no special tools.

  • 1.Secure the Tailgate: Fully raise your rear hatch. Because the old struts are weak and tailgates are exceptionally heavy, use a sturdy prop rod or have a friend hold it open securely to prevent injury.
  • 2.Release the Retaining Clips: Locate the small metal band retaining clips on the back of the ball-joint end sockets. Insert a small flat-head screwdriver under the clip and pry it slightly outward to release the joint tension.
  • 3.Pop Off the Old Boot Shock: Gently pull the old boot strut socket away from the vehicle’s metal ball studs. Wipe away any gritty grease or road grime from the original mounting pins.
  • 4.Snap the New Boot Strut On: Orient the new GASTAC boot strut with the thick cylinder body pointing upward (connected to the hatch hinge) and the thin metal rod pointing downward (connected to the vehicle body). Align the socket and push firmly onto the ball stud until it snaps securely home!
